Interested in starting a Medals4Mettle Chapter in your area?

First, decide if you have the time and commitment it takes! Usually it is very busy around the time of your local event, so you will likely have to recruit other volunteers to help with this worthwhile cause.

Initial Steps (Getting in the door with the Event):

1) Contact the organizer for your event. Be prepared to describe M4M including its mission, history, legacy cards and other relevant material. Remember that the event director has many responsibilities and M4M is asking a favor to be included in the event. The Director will probably visit the Website eventually, but you must be prepared to answer all questions first. It may be helpful to present the concept to the organizer with a sample medal/ribbon and press releases/photos/letters/legacy cards from previous donors.

Ask to be at the Expo, to be publicized in their announcements (i.e. newsletters/email blasts), have flyers in the race packet. You may not get all or any of these. Go slowly, the idea sells itself. M4M permits runners to run for others who are running a difficult race of their own.

2) Another key is to contact a local hospital, usually a pediatric hospital. Again explain our mission and history. We can provide references. The donated medals are cleaned and new ribbons are placed on them. Use the same process you used successfully with the event. These two processes should be started together. It requires some diplomacy and patience. Remember, M4M sells itself.

Next Steps (Once M4M is an accepted participant of Event):

  1. Once you are working with the event and you have medal recipients set up at the hospital, contact training groups, running clubs and stores and post items in email blasts, online forums, blogs and newsletters. Attend meetings as much as you can.
  2. Create and print flyers. Please contact us to obtain authorization to use our logo and other materials including our brochure design artwork.
  3. Set up mailing address for mailed-in medals.
  4. Locate volunteers to sew new M4M ribbons on donated medals.
  5. Raise funds through sponsorship of runners themselves (www.Firstgiving.com).You will need to have some funds to purchase the proprietary ribbons from us.
  6. Recruit volunteers.
  7. Advertise www.medals4mettle.org and direct inquiries about the charity to the site. Almost all questions can be answered there.

Have fun! The reward is seeing smiles on the faces of chronically ill children. They need to know that others are with them all the way! If you have any questions about setting up a local chapter please contact us via email. Thank you!
